Letter from the Bishop-Elect of Bunyoro-Kitara in Uganda

The diocese of Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese has been grieved by the unilateral decision taken by the Canadian Diocese of New Westminster at its recent annual synod to authorize the blessing of same sex unions. We vehemently counsel the Diocese not to implement that fateful decision.  I know that the church in Africa [should read "America"? -ed.] has financial muscle to assert her position on the issue of sexuality but what I know is that we in Africa are going to go by the uniform witness of the bible, tradition and reason embodied in a natural law regarding homosexuality.

We applaud the courageous and bold stand that has been taken by the 23 Bishops in ECUSA, the American Anglican Council; South Carolina Bishops; the Nathaniel Alliance of Renewal Groups in United Church of Canada and 13 Anglican Bishops in Canada and a host of many others who have not been reported.

Let it be known throughout our communion that however subtle the so called "High theological tones" will be brought to Africa, we will always know the hidden agendas behind them.  Let us not be considered unable to understand theological trends but merely mindful of authority.

The basis of our position is the clear teaching of our Lord, the holy scriptures, the unanimous witness of the Christian tradition; and the lambeth conference 1998.  We would like to maintain the unity of the Anglican communion but surely not at the cost of sacrificing truth. Let us be aware that what we have cherished all along through out the ages will not be sacrificed at the altar of inclusions.

We pledge our support, solidarity and love with all those who are standing for the millennium old teaching of Christ.

Rev. Canon Nathan Kyamanywa
Bishop-Elect-Bunyoro-Kitara Diocese
